“Rough Waters”

A Gaby FanFic

Prologue:

Thanks go out to the various fanfic authors and Maddy Bell, herself, for creating this ‘universe' and providing the inspiration. Whether you realize it or not, there's a part of each of you, in this work. I also wish to dedicate this work to Karen J, Jillian and Angharad – three lovely people without who's prodding, this or any other of my writings, would have never appeared.

… And to all who read this, I hope you enjoy it as much as it was for me to continue the Journey.

It would seem that I've been put on a literary path somewhat like George Lucas did with Star Wars. “Rough Waters” is the prequel to “Reconciliation”, which in turn was based upon “Notes of a Journey”. As such, like “Reconciliation”, it is highly recommended your read/re-read “Notes of a Journey”, at least up to the point the kids are preparing to leave Grottoes, Virginia. This is to avoid any confusion with references to events that occurred prior to the start of “Rough Waters”.

The final party at Pru's is winding down…….

Chapter 1

“Well, that went well,” Debbie quietly observed.

“Yeah … I thought this was to be a bit of a party. Instead it had all the feeling of a ‘wake' for the recently departed”, replied Jules as she was dabbing her eyes. “Where's Gaby and Brit?”

Looking around at the mix of American host families and their British guests, Debbie was the first to spot her sister standing with several of the American kids and the ‘gang'.

“Excuse me Deb, I see Gaby.” Jules stated as she moved towards her sister. While she was walking over to Gaby, Jules noticed that Maddy followed her with a blank stare as she passed the group of kids.

“Need I ask why you're over here by yourself an' Brit's over there with the others?” It was a rhetorical question, and both girls knew it. Instead, Jules just took her sister into her arms and gently stroked Gaby's hair.

“We'll get through it together, Sis … it's almost over,” Jules quietly murmured.

Gaby looked at Jules and replied, just as quietly, “Is it? ( sigh ) … c'mon, Deb's waiting with her parents.”

As they joined the Walters, Britney detached herself from her friends and walked over to join her parents. While Jules and Debbie went off to get in the car with Mr. Walters, Britney and Gaby clambered into the Forester as Mrs. Walters got behind the wheel. As Gaby was getting in, she saw Em and Maddy both quickly look away from her when they saw her looking at them. Ally saw the exchange and with a puzzled look, turned back towards Gaby, questioning what she had just witnessed with a subtle shrug of the shoulders.

Following quiet drives back to the house; the four girls decided they'd get changed for bed and then get together in the Walters girl's bedroom for a quiet talk and long good-byes. As they all crowded into the room, sitting on Brit and Debbie's beds, Jocelyn entered with a tray of ice cream and hot chocolate.

“Thought you girls could do with a bit of something to put a wee smile on those long faces.” As she put the tray down on the girl's dresser she added, “I know it's a school day tomorrow, but considering the circumstances, we'll forgo ‘lights out'.” Following a chorus of thank you, Mrs. Walters left the room and closed the door to give the girls a bit of space.

As they went for the tray, Debbie broke the silence, directing her comment at both of the Bond girls. “I'm gonna miss you guys sumpthin' awful”.

“Me too”, Britney added in subdued tones. Tears were in the eyes of all four of the girls as the two pair of sisters exchanged long hugs. The mutual hugs were only broken when Gaby pointed out the ice cream was in danger of melting.

As the evening wore on, the four reminisced about their time together, both in Warsop and in Grottoes. Jules and Deb both noticed when Debbie apologized to Drew for keeping him in skirts; Brit cast her eyes downward and remained quiet. When it came to talking about the US visit, other than thanking Brit for introducing her to Erin, which in turn led to all her cycling exploits in the US, Gaby was uncharacteristically quiet. Jules was aware how uncomfortable it was for Gaby when Debbie asked her what she liked about the trip other than the cycling. Gaby plainly didn't wish to share her true feelings with the Walters girls.

“Be right back … nature calls”, Gaby intoned to no one in particular as she got up to leave.

After Gaby shut the door behind her, the three continued to talk but after awhile it occurred to Jules that Gabs hadn't returned. At that point she excused herself and went to see if her sister was alright. Debbie took the opportunity to unsuccessfully to coax her sister to apologize when Gaby returned.

“Ya know both girls noticed when you didn't apologize and I could see that really hurt Gabs … an' she's done nothing to deserve that! You two really hit it off in Warsop but even I've noticed how you've been with her while she's been here … why the change? … About the only times you were decent to her was whenever the two of you were in the house. Even tonight, you tried your best to spend as little time with Gaby as possible … an' I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed! What is your problem in life?” Debbie sharply rebuked her sister. In way of reply, Britney just cast her eyes down and feeling her eyes moisten, turned away silently shaking her head.

As Jules approached ‘their' room, she noticed the door was slightly ajar and what appeared to be the lamp on the night table between their beds was on. Thinking Mrs. Walters turned the lamp on and not hearing any movement, Jules was about to turn around when she heard what sounded like quiet sobs, coming from the room. Upon entering, she saw Gaby sitting on her bed, back to the door and obviously holding her pillow up to her face to try to silence her crying.

Barefoot and on a carpeted floor, Jules silently approached her sister. When she gently touched the back of Gaby's head, Gaby visibly jumped and looked up at Jules.

“You didn't need to go to the loo, did you? Jules quietly asked as she sat on the bed beside her sister and put her arm around Gaby's waist, pulling the two even closer. Gaby looked at her sister and silently shook her head while Jules did her best to wipe the tears from Gaby's eyes.

“I don't know any more Sis … is this how it's gonna be for the rest of my life? ( sniff ) … shunned by people because someone points their finger and says ‘lookit the lezzie'?” Jules noted the venom spouted by Gabs when she said ‘someone' – obviously in her mind, meaning Britney or Dan.

“It was bad enough when the kids wouldn't talk to me unless they had to, but even some of the teachers like Mrs. Pryce an' Miss Jackson knew … Mrs. Pryce was always on my case in Home Ec. ... ( sniff ) … Was it my bloody fault I never had Home Ec. before or knew how to sew? … ( sniff ) … Is it my fault I love Maddy? … Even Brit and the ‘gang' didn't want to be seen talking to the ‘lezbo' an' now I've lost them … I've even lost Maddy…. ( sniff ) …You saw how it was tonight…. ” Gaby's voice trailed off amid a new barrage of heavy sobs. Eventually, Gaby continued airing her feelings.

“How could I answer Deb when she asked what I liked about the trip other than cycling? What do I do? … look her in the eye an' say ‘Nothing!' or do I tell her I loved it when the kids ignored me at school and on the field trips or when Rhod ‘volunteered me' to wear that civil war dress an' hadta change with that lady or even when Mrs. W forced me to go to Sandy's sleepover by making Erin promise to drop me there … ( sniff ) why was Brit so insistent that I attend the Valentine dance – she knew I didn't want to dance with boys, then Mrs. Walters joining her by saying I should go or when Maddy made no pretense of her hatred for Gaby throughout the whole trip – ‘cept for Sandy's sleepover, then she treated me like she did before …. an' if it wasn't for Miss C an' this stupid cheer competition, I could've been Drew one last time. “

Then looking at Jules she added, “well, that an' Brit an' Deb not telling their ‘rents Drew was a boy.” Jules let her sister continue to rant, hoping by talking about it, it would get the hurt out of her system. Least ways, it had worked all the previous nights.

“What's it gonna be like when we get back? Gaby's gonna be in school, not Drew. What're the other kids gonna say about that … about me? I don't have the ‘gang' there for me anymore … I don't have any friends there anymore.” Gaby's voice, although pleading, was strong and full of spite.

Jules looked at her, not knowing what words of comfort she could offer her sister. She knew that this pain was the culmination of all the pain Gabs endured on the trip. Seemingly in a trance, lost in thought and staring off into space, Gaby kept going.

“No more dual life … no more ‘Barbie doll' for you, Mum or Maddy …Mum and Dad won't have wonder about me any more and we won't have to live a lie explaining why Gaby is around but Drew isn't … no more being embarrassed with having a lesbian in the family … even my body is messed up – it doesn't know what I am … I don't know what I am … It'd be much simpler for me and everyone else if I just called it quits and put an end to it all!”

Jules was aware Gaby's comments were becoming mixed and irrational, going from making references to life as Drew to her new life as Gaby. However, it was the last statement, uttered in a cold and casual way that really hit Jules and scared her.

The tears just welled up inside Jules and freely flowed. In a response that was a mix of her own pent-up emotions and pleading with her sister, Jules raised her voice in a panic and shouted out her feelings, only to have them degrade into heavy sobs as she embraced her sister.

“Nooooo!! … Gaby … you can't … you can't…”

Upon hearing Jules, Debby ran out of her room and scrambled through Jules and Gaby's bedroom door. When she saw Jules, tightly hugging her sister and both girls in tears, Deb realized that something was terribly amiss. Remaining at the door, Debbie could hear Jules trying to reason with her little sister, between their heavy sobs.

“Don't ever say that again, Sis … we love you … I love you ( sniff ) … we'll find a way to get through all this … Besides, it's not as bad as Grottoes back home, is it? No one back home cared if you looked like a lesbian ... I mean no one bothered you and Maddy when you were seen holding hands or kissing, did they? An' you've always told me everyone took you for a girl, no matter if you were in Drew-mode or not. “

Then trying to sound a little more optimistic, Jules added, “HEY! … Didn't you say that George offered Dad a job? … If he took it we'd move to Germany, right? … No one knows Drew so we all could start fresh … we just tell Dad to accept it … ok?” Her voice fading amidst her tears and sobs, Jules managed one last plea before breaking down completely.

“I love you, Sis… Please … don't say or think of ending it again, ok? … pl … ( sniff ) … please?”

With her eyes filled with her own tears Gaby nodded her head, gave Jules a kiss on the cheek and said, “I promise.” She then tightened her hold on Jules and kept it for what seemed an eternity.

Debbie quietly closed the bedroom door as she made her way back to her room, shaken by what she heard. Upon hearing their Mom come up the stairs, Debbie took the opportunity to quickly turn to her sister and with no further explanation hissed out a particularly venomous “Damn you, Britney!”

Looking in on her girls, Jocelyn assumed they were turning in and on seeing light coming from under the other bedroom door, started off to tell Jules and Gaby to turn in as well. As she did so, Debbie caught her mom's arm.

“Leave them, Mom … please”? Debbie softly pleaded.

Sensing Debbie meant that the Bond girls wanted time to themselves, Mrs. Walters replied, “Ok … I guess they'll turn out the light when they're ready.” She then turned and went back downstairs.

Entering the room in the morning to awaken the girls, Debbie found Jules, lying on her right side, spooned up against Gaby. Her left arm was draped over her sister and Gaby was clutching her sister's hand with both of her own, holding it against her breasts. Debbie gently shook Gaby's shoulder, making sure Gaby was awake before retreating back to her own room.

After the girls were dressed and finished breakfast, Mr. Walters brought down their bags and put them in the back of the Forester and then saying his own slightly tearful good-byes to Jules and Gaby, left for work in his car. A short while later, all the girls were ready for Mrs. Walters to take them on that last ride (for the Bond girls anyway) to AHS. Brit got in the front with her mother and Debbie deliberately sat in the back, between Jules and Gaby. It was a short, quiet ride to the school and Debbie held hands with both Jules and Gaby until they arrived at the school.

Once in the parking lot Mrs. Walters selected a parking space near George's bus where both George and Mr. Pilling were already in the process of loading some of the bags into the back of the school bus through the rear door. Both Miss Bell and Miss Cowlishaw were standing outside the rear of the bus, checking each of the British students off the list as they arrived. Miss C was also returning their passports as they checked in.

As they all got out of the Forester, they girls proceeded around the back to get their bags. Brit followed Gaby and as the pair rounded the back of the vehicle, hidden from view of the school and her classmates, Brit suddenly embraced Gaby in a tight hug.

“God, I'm sorry Gab. Can you ever forgive me? It wasn't supposed to be like this ( sniff ) … Casey would've made sure I was a social nobody if I didn't go along … that's why I was so distant while at school … I never expected it to turn your friends against you like it did … I'm so sorry.” Brit was trying hard not to shed any tears, but as her mother and the two older girls noted, she failed miserably.

“What's done is done”, intoned Gaby as she returned Brit's embrace and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Gaby quickly added, “I'll live.”

The last comment struck both Jules and Deb as ironic, given last night's events. Before they broke their embrace, Brit surprised Gaby and their sisters, not to mention Jocelyn by giving Gaby a not-so-quick kiss on the lips.

“Been wanting to do that since arriving in Warsop … Drew”, a smiling Britney whispered in Gaby's ear. As no one other than Britney and Gaby heard the verbal exchange, Jocelyn was flabbergasted with what she witnessed but Deb and Jules, smiling to themselves, knew exactly what was behind the kiss.

“Over here girls … quickly now …” Miss C called over upon seeing Jules and Gaby by the SUV.

Maddy was just checking her bag with George and as he put it on the bus, Jessica asked Maddy if she'd mind taking a birthday present for Gaby, in her luggage. The idea was to give it to Gaby when they got to the hotel. Maddy accepted the parcel and quickly put it in her bag before allowing George to put it in the bus.

Upon checking in with Miss Bell and getting their passports, Jules waited until Gaby moved away before talking to the two teachers.

Addressing Fran, Jules asked, “Miss, can you put Gaby and me together in Washington? It's real important.”

When pressed to elaborate, Jules gave both ladies an account of the previous night, including Gaby's casual statement to ‘end it'. Miss C immediately checked her notes and decided to cross out Maddy's name and move her to take Jules' room allocation. She decided Justine would just have to accept the younger girl.

Fran had a small smile cross her face as she completed her change. Back at Warsop College, she had originally put Rhod & Drew together in DC. But learning of Gaby's decision and that Drew was technically female; she thought that Maddy would be a more suitable roommate, thinking of how familiar she was with Gaby. That left the question of Rhod and the answer would have to be found before they reached to hotel.

Both Jessica and Fran were taken aback with what Jules told them about Gaby's visit. Jessica was livid at the way the American kids decided to treat Gaby and made a note that she would talk with Mary the first opportunity after the British kids left, to try and determine who would be punished. Casey and Dan or was that Britney, for sure, but how should they proceed? There was also the question if they should even proceed with the rest of the Gr. 9's? That was going to be a tough call. Was this a case of prejudice and intent or follow-the-leader? In addition, what exactly would be told to the kids they dealt with or to their parents, for that matter? Jessica considered that she'd have to choose her words carefully to Mary or anyone else, so as not to compromise Gaby.

After they thanked Jules for this information, she was allowed to board the bus. Upon entering, Jules noted Gaby was sitting by herself, a few rows behind the last pair of students.

“Hi beautiful, haven't seen you here before … mind if I join you?” asked Jules, obviously trying to put a smile on her sister's face.

“Please … it's not often I have such lovely company.” Gaby cooed seductively as motioned for her sister to join her with a gesture of her hand. That brought a quiet giggle from both girls and it sounded really good to Jules. As both Fran and Jessica boarded the bus the chatter died down quickly.

Stopping at the front of the bus, Miss Cowlishaw looked at the kids and noted Maddy was seated with Bernie and Em with Ally. She also noted Jules and Gaby were sitting towards the back of the bus, away from the rest of the kids.

“First some seating changes … Miss Peters, up here at the front with me; Miss Morgan, up here with Mr. Pilling, and Miss Lacey, would you please sit with Miss Rose?” Fran instructed in a tone that conveyed displeasure. As the seat shuffle died down, Ally sat down beside Bernie with a shrug of the shoulders.

“What was all that about?” whispered Bernie.

“Miss Rose! … no talking please … for the moment … thank you.” Miss Cowlishaw interjected.

Surveying her work, she added, “The person you are now sitting with will be your room mate at the hotel in Washington, with the exception of Miss Peters and Miss Morgan … Justine? … Miss Peters will be your room mate.”

Seeing that Em was going to speak, Fran leaned over and told Em that she'd be discussing accommodations with her once they got to Washington and the room situation became clearer but emphasized ‘Rhod' was going to be returning to Warsop. In response to Em's questioning look, she added that Gaby was going to room with her sister. In disgust, Em noted that at no time did Miss C say ‘Drew was returning to Warsop', yet specified ‘Rhod' was to return.

After the commotion died down, Jessica gave a short farewell address to the British kids then walked down the aisle and said a few words and gave a hug to both of the Bond girls. This did not go unnoticed by Maddy. As Jessica left the bus, George shut the doors and put the bus into gear. They were finally on their way amidst a flurry of hand waving and some tears between the gathered host families and the kids on the bus.

As George moved off the exit ramp onto the Interstate, he pulled out his collection of CD's and like on all the previous field trips with the kids, polled their musical tastes. Listing the choices, Queen's “Classic Queen” won the poll by a landslide; so on it went to the delight of the kids. A few of the pieces even resulted in a sing-along, much to the amusement of the escorts.

Traffic increased and so did the falling snow as the bus got closer to Washington. By the time they entered Washington the snow was falling heavily and the kids were starting to think they'd get to the hotel faster if they walked. As a result, the escorts decided to shuffle the itinerary around making Saturday a ‘tour day' instead of the planned ‘free' day.

After some discussion with the escorts, George tried to give the kids a short driving tour of the US Capital before heading to the hotel, in spite of the weather. At the hotel after dropping off the group, George bade farewell to everyone and headed back to Grottoes. No one envied him driving in this snow!

“Em, a moment please?” Miss C asked. She wasn't sure exactly what she was going to say to Em, but she knew it had to be done in such a way as not to betray Gaby's confidence.

She explained why Rhod had to return to Warsop and even though Em was in tears, she reluctantly accepted the explanation – again noting that Miss C failed to mention Drew. Then the discussion focused on accommodation. Fran explained that Rhod and Drew were originally to share but due to changed circumstances she couldn't expand upon, Gaby was rooming with her sister, so that left Rhod as the ‘odd man out'.

“Can I offer a suggestion Miss? … Why not let me room with Ally and Bernie if you don't wish me to have my own room? I've just spent six weeks living as Em, sharing dressing rooms and showers with the girls and even had three sleepovers. Em can stay with them and I guess I can be Rhod to go back home.” Em pleaded her case to Miss Cowlishaw. It wasn't perfect as far as Em was concerned, but it would give her some additional time in skirts.

After pondering Em's suggestion, Fran consulted with Ally and Bernie before finally allowing Em to share with them. As their rooms had two beds and a couch that made into a day-bed, sleeping arrangements were no problem.

“How come you and Drew aren't sharing?” Ally asked her boyfriend.

“Miss C won't tell me … just says that Gaby is sharing with her sister and that I have to be Rhod to go home and from what she didn't say, it sounds like Gaby will stay Gaby!” Em replied, with more than a touch of disappointment in her voice.

“That's not fair, is it….”, echoed both Bernie and Ally.

Friday was reserved for some sightseeing. According to the schedule, they were to start with a tour of the White House. After the tour, Mr. Pilling took the older students and Miss C took the others, both agreeing to meet for dinner back at a Chinese restaurant downtown.

Fran thought the White House tour was a bit of a disappointment because it was so short. Her hopes for Capitol Hill were to prove just as disappointing. As interesting as Capitol Hill proved for the kids, the real educational value, as she saw it, was lost. Since they had no representative and weren't US citizens, they weren't allowed into the visitor's gallery of either the Congress or the Senate. As her group had recently studied their own Parliamentary system, it would've provided a nice contrast to see the US system at work.

Following the tour of the ‘Hill', Fran took suggestions for further tours and both of Gaby's suggestions for the Air and Space Museum and the Vietnam Memorial Wall were accepted. Miss C noted that even Maddy spoke up and endorsed both of them.

Walking over to the museum, Fran approached Gaby and asked, “Everything alright?”

“I guess … thanks for asking … why?” asked a puzzled Gaby, with a shrug to the shoulders.

“Well considering what Jules told Miss Bell and myself about the other night … your friends … they certainly don't appear to be as distant as Jules made out … Maddy seems cordial enough.”

“Sometimes they're friendly to me, then the next minute …” Gaby's voice drifted off. After a very short silence, Gaby turned to look at Fran and said in a weak voice “Besides … Sis said we'd get through this together … an' I believe her.”

“Well if you need to talk, you know where I am … and please … please, don't keep it bottled inside you, ok dear?” The very real concern in her voice quite evident, Fran gently touched Gaby's shoulder, before turning her attention to where they were heading.

As Fran moved off, Maddy jogged up beside Gaby and quietly asked, “Whadda she want?”

“I dunno … she wanted to know if everything was ok.” Gaby replied.

“Is it?” Maddy countered.

“I dunno … you tell me.” Gaby shot back in a quiet and pleading voice. When she turned to look at Maddy, Maddy noticed Gabs' eyes were moist. To Gaby, it looked as if Maddy might actually open up and say something.

“Gaby … I …“ Maddy's voice quickly went silent as she was about to say something but caught herself . Instead she cast her glance down and looked away, before she moved off a bit and continued walking in silence.

The group explored the museum for a short time before grabbing some lunch. After that, it was off to Gaby's “Wall” and the other monuments in the area, like the Lincoln Memorial, the Washington Monument, followed by a quick stop at the Iwo Jima Memorial prior to heading off to the National Aquarium before they met up with Mr. Pilling and the others for dinner at a real Chinese restaurant, then back to the hotel.

Back at the hotel, as they got off the bus, word had spread among the younger kids about Rhod having to make an appearance to go home while Gaby apparently didn't. This caused Gaby to get a lot of ‘evil' looks from the ‘gang', just as things were from Gaby's perspective, settling down. Both Jules and Fran could see something was amiss just by looking at the kids' faces.

Up in their room Jules wondered how the day went for her sister and if it might account for the way the kids reacted earlier.

“Sis? … you ok?” asked a concerned Jules.

“I guess… I dunno…” Gaby flatly stated as she flopped down on the bed.

As Jules sat on the bed to comfort her sister, she had to rise again to answer a knock at the door. After inquiring who was there, Jules opened the door to admit Miss Cowlishaw.

“You ok, Gaby?” Fran asked, prompting Jules and Gaby to look at each other and break out in a laughing fit.

When they both composed themselves, Gaby turned towards a bemused Miss C, apologized for the outburst and told her Jules asked the same question seconds before she arrived.

“Quite alright … in fact it's nice to see you laughing again … may I?” Fran asked as she started to sit beside Gaby on the edge of the bed.

In a more serious tone, she continued, “I believe I know why your friends were upset with you tonight and it may be partially my fault.” She paused to let that sink in. “When we first arrived at the hotel, Em and I discussed accommodation as she's technically male … and without a room … that problem has been solved but another has been created … I allowed Em to room with Ally and Bernie but insisted Rhod appear to travel back home because of his documentation … at the same time I never mentioned Drew.” Fran stopped to let it register with Gaby.

“Geez, I never thought of it, but I'll have to be Drew to go home – look at me … I couldn't pass as a boy if I tried!” Gaby was starting to panic. Fran saw Jules was getting worried as well.

“Gaby … GABY … settle down. Don't worry Gaby is going home! When you stayed with Miss Bell as Maddy, you recall the long talk you two enjoyed? That week, she suggested that I get your father to fax a copy of Dr. Sanwari's letter, for this very reason. It's on his office letterhead, with his stamp so it's as good as a legal document. We can use it if your documentation or explanation is challenged … I'll be right with you when you go through Immigration.”

As soon as Gaby settled, Miss C continued. “The problem is that Em thinks this is very unfair and more than likely, the others do too … they don't know about … ‘Gaby' … do they?” Gaby shook her head in response.

“See? … Without that information, can you blame them for reacting as they did?” Miss Cowlishaw put the question to Gaby and Jules. She went on to add “You probably have a good reason why they don't know but it also may help if do you let your friends know before we leave … it's up to you … think about it, ok?”

As she rose to leave, Gaby bade her good-night. “Thanks, Miss … I'll promise I'll think about it.”

When the door closed, Jules turned to her sister. “Waddya think? … An' just why have you never told the others, Sis?”

“Just didn't seem right … I mean Maddy wasn't there when I told the family … then we were more worried about Mum … an' by the time Mum was feeling better, I never did have a chance to tell them cuz either I couldn't get them alone, they weren't around or they weren't interested in talkin' to me ... half the time Maddy didn't believe anything that came out of Gaby's mouth, anyway ... an' now with things like they are, it's almost like telling strangers … don't know if I want to tell them … ‘specially now that we might move.” Jules noticed Gaby's voice got quiet as she spoke.

“But if I did tell them, they could call me a ‘freak' or a ‘lesbo', couldn't they?” Gaby sarcastically said as she looked at Jules.

“C'mon, lets get ready for bed … things'll look better in the morning.” Jules tried to sound optimistic as she hugged Gaby.

Saturday, the final full day in the US and things did seem better. After meeting in the hotel's dining room, for a quick breakfast, the ‘gang' found themselves together going through the buffet line.

“Where ya going? … c'mon, sit with us an' give Jules a break.” Maddy asked Gaby as they were heading for the tables.

“C'mon”, added Ally as Bernie came up and joined them. As they found their seats, Jules walked by their table and gave her sister a knowing smile, before she joined Justine at her table.

“Mr. P said we're going to Arlington National Cemetery this morning, but we get to go shopping this afternoon!” Em chimed in as she joined the rest of the ‘gang' at their table.

“YES!” All five girls sounded as one.

Shortly after leaving the hotel in the hotel's mini bus, they found themselves slowly driving amongst the rows of graves. The kid's preconceived ideas of the cemetery where quickly brushed aside as they toured Arlington. The sheer size of Arlington was enough to get their undivided attention. Besides learning that the plots were laid out according to era, they visited some of the more famous grave sites, like the one for President Kennedy and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as many famous figures In American history.

After they finished touring Arlington, the bus quickly made its way to Fair Oaks Mall and shopping! Ally commented the school should make shopping a proper sporting event and give the girls a chance to amass some points for their ‘house'. Miss C, giggling at the suggestion, said she'd bring that up at the next staff meeting. Mr. Pilling missed the humour of the situation, all together.

Once in the Mall, more by coincidence than intent, the group split along the same lines the escorts had divided them for Friday's tours. The older girls decided to go off together, as did the younger students. Both escorts were going to go their own way but plans were made for everyone to meet at a certain spot, at a certain time and they were not to leave the Mall.

“Ok everyone … it's now 10 o'clock … back here at Starbuck's by 1 PM … understood?” Mr. P announced and everyone nodded amid a chorus of “Yes, sir”.

“Off with you and enjoy yourselves!” Miss Cowlishaw added. None of the girls needed any more encouragement and the two escorts soon found themselves alone in front of Starbuck's.

The ‘gang' stayed together, exploring all the stores, trying on clothes, getting those last minute presents for family and generally having the time of their lives. As far as Maddy was concerned, it took her shopping skills to a new level. But two hours of power shopping in a Mall as big as Fair Oaks began to take its toll on Gaby.

“Slow down, guys … my feet are killing me … I don't think I even go as far on a training ride as I've walked.” Gaby pleaded.

“Run, is more like it.” Bernie added, referring to the pace of Mad's power shopping.

“So many stores … so little time … H&M … pretty please? … last store I promise!” Maddy asked the group.

“How can you say ‘no'? … Look at her … she looks so pitiful”, Em intoned as she moved to avoid a playful swipe of Maddy's hand.

“You guys go ahead; I'll join you at Starbuck's in a little while.” Gaby offered.

As the others went off, Gaby noticed she was outside a ‘Ladies Foot Locker' and recalling how Britney went on about the store; she decided to have a look inside. A short time later she walked out, broke, but the proud owner of a pair of Nike Air Rift sandals.

As she approached her friends in front of Starbucks, there was a commotion in the Mall with people running and screaming. As Ally emerged with two teas, a single ‘crack' was heard. It was immediately followed with Ally spinning around, dropping her teas as she grabbed her arm and collapsed to the floor.

“OH GOD! I'm bleeding!!” Ally cried out, taking a look at her hand.

While many stood around in a confused state, someone hollered, “Call 911! Someone's been shot”

Bernie had been closely following Ally out of Starbucks when Ally was hit. Seeing the blood, Bernie quickly knelt down beside Ally and after she freed Ally's arm from her coat, made a makeshift tourniquet from her own scarf and wrapped it around Ally's arm. At the same time, Gaby came running up, dropping down at Ally's side and using her hand, applied direct pressure to the wound. A staff member came out shortly thereafter and offered Gaby a clean towel, which Gaby gladly used as a bandage. It wasn't very many minutes after that the paramedics arrived and relieved the two girls.

Em accompanied Ally to the hospital, while both Bernie and Gaby gave a statement to the police. Maddy flagged down Miss C and Mr. P as they walked up to Starbucks. Miss Cowlishaw was driven to the hospital by one of the officers, while his partner remained, trying to sort things out. While taking statements, the officer noted that the 9mm bullet passed through Ally's arm and was lodged in the doorframe of the main entrance to Starbuck's.

“You really should wear ‘scrubs' if you two plan to operate.” Jules commented as she looked at Bern's and Gabs blood spattered clothes. While attending to Ally, both knelt in pools of her blood.

“Oh! … shi - oot! My coat!” Gaby cried out when she noticed what Jules was talking about. The manager of Starbuck's appeared and offered to rinse off the girl's coats, but their jeans were another matter.

“You're in the right place to buy a new pair.” Jules offered.

“With what? … I'm broke!” Gaby countered.

“What she said”, Bern agreed.

After they were allowed to leave the scene, Mr. Pilling gladly replaced the girl's jeans as a reward for their quick action. Walking through the Mall with blood-stained jeans resulted in many a stare and made the girls feel self-conscious. Finally cleaned-up, Mr. Pilling herded all the girls back onto the bus to go back to the hotel and dinner. It was early evening when they regrouped in the hotel lobby before heading to the hotel restaurant.

“Allllieeeee!” Maddy shouted as she caught sight of Miss Cowlishaw and Ally entering the Main doors of the hotel.

“Careful, of her arm … don't crowd her … she's still a little shaken.” Miss C cautioned as Ally was mobbed by the rest of the exchange students.

“Thanks guys…” Ally intoned as he gave both Bernie and Gaby a weak hug.

“So how bad was it?” Mr. Pilling asked.

“The doctor said the bullet went clear through her arm, just missing bone and the artery. Ally lost a fair bit of blood but few millimetres to either side and it would've been a different story. Most of the time we spent there was sorting out all the paperwork. She wasn't in their Emergency Room all that long. We already had bit of something at the hospital, so a good night's rest will do her a world of good,” Miss Cowlishaw related.

When told they were just going to eat, Fran asked Ally if she felt like eating something else or would she just rather go up to her room and lie down.

“Just wanna go lie down … if you don't mind?” Ally quietly replied.

“If Jules can bring me something later, I'll go up with her, Miss.” Gaby offered.

“Ok, Ally?” Miss C asked. When Ally nodded, the two set off for the elevators while the others headed for the dinning room.

As they neared Ally's room she turned to Gaby and asked if they could go to her room.

“What's the difference?” Gaby asked.

“Betcha your room is cleaner … at least you don't have three beds and can watch TV without having to move a pile of clothes.” Ally said, as she tried to keep a straight face. Once in the room, Gaby had Ally lie down on one of the beds, propping her up with pillows from the couch, so she could watch TV. She also fetched Ally some water to sip on.

“Drew? … Can I ask you something?” Ally quietly asked as Gaby turned the set on.

“What?” Gabs replied as she muted the volume.

“Em's saying that you can stay Gaby while Rhod has to appear to go home tomorrow … is that true?”

“Yeah.” Gaby murmured.

“Why … I know Em might seem a bit boyish at times, but …?”

“Is that why you guys protected her but left me on my own these last few weeks? … you all seemed to abandon me … hardly talking to me an' everything … Maddy has even …..” Gaby started to tear up as her voice trailed off.

“I know … we've been a bunch of cows at times, haven't we … sorry … it's just that it was so easy to forget you and Rhod are both boys … Em's ‘learning', but it's so natural to you … you're so much a girl”, Ally tried to comfort Gaby and explain at the same time.

Gaby decided to let Ally in on the secret. “I am”

“You're what?” Ally was curious.

“A girl … ( sigh ) … I was born a girl” Gaby stated in a quiet voice.

If it was possible for Ally to become any paler than she was, she did when she heard Gaby's response. Gaby proceeded to fill Ally in on the test results, the decision and her fears of what lay ahead back in Warsop. When Gaby spoke of not having the ‘gang' or Maddy, if Ally felt any better she would've hugged Gabs for all she's worth!

“Just because I'm really Gaby, doesn't change my feelings for Maddy … I wanna know what's changed her … she told me she loved Gaby before we came here.” Gaby couldn't hold back the tears any more.

Ally was also in tears. “God, I'm so sorry Gaby … maybe if I talk to the others … talk to Maddy…”

“No! … Promise me you won't tell anyone … if things work out, it won't matter for much longer anyway.” Although she didn't intend to tell Ally, Gaby was soon telling her all about her dad's job offer and the possibility of a move.

“Come here.” Ally tearfully asked of Gaby. As Gabs got off the other bed, she sat beside Ally.

“I promise.” Ally took Gaby's hand and raising it to her own lips, planted a gentle kiss on the back of Gaby's hand. As Ally lay there, she clutched Gab's hand and stared at her, all the while trying to contain her own tears.

“Finally! … I was playing musical rooms looking for you two.” Jules cheerfully stated as she entered the room and put down Gaby's burger.

“Oh…”, uttered Jules as she saw both had been crying.

“I told her, Sis.” Gaby intoned.

“You gonna tell the others?”

“No.” Gaby replied, her voice weak - almost a whisper.

Jules answered the door to let Fran in. Before she could say anything, Gaby asked her to explain to Ally about Rhod having to return to Warsop. When she looked at Gaby with an inquisitive look, Gaby responded by saying “I've told her about Gaby … so it's ok to mention the letter … but I'm not telling the others.”

Miss Cowlishaw sat down on the one section of the couch that had a pillow and started to explain the situation.

“I understand now … I think Em's mad only because she's being forced to be Rhod while Gaby stays Gaby.” Ally offered.

“If you don't tell her it's coming from me, I think I might have a solution … at least Em will get off the bus at the school.” Gaby interjected.

“Spill it, girl!” Ally cajoled. Fran was also interested in Gaby's solution.

“Quiet simple really … Em gets dressed as normal tomorrow, but no boobs or make-up and hair brushed like a boy. She wears her own clothes … an' jeans, but Rhod's shirt and trainers … oh yeah, Rhod's coat. Barring a strip search, they're not going to see what's underneath, are they? … Rhod goes through customs here, flies home and goes through customs there … when we go to the bus, someone checks the loo and Rhod enters with his bag, puts her boobs in her bra, a little lippy, change of shoes, a brush of the hair and Em comes out.”

“That may just work! … when did you come up with this … what made you think of this, I mean considering how things are…” Fran excitedly asked.

“Thought about this last night and as for why … despite it all, Rhod and Drew are mates,” Gaby replied in an emotion tinged voice. Ally gave another squeeze to Gaby's hand.

“I better tell her MY IDEA before everyone turns in,” Fran intoned as she got up to leave. She turned to Ally and helped her off the bed and then the two slowly made their way to Ally's room.

“You're amazing, Sis.” Jules softly murmured.

“I know … just a sentimental old cow … let's get ready for bed,” Gaby replied with a giggle.

The next day had the group all up at the proverbial crack of dawn. In the dinning room for an early breakfast, Gaby got her meal and sat down at the table opposite Ally.

“Mornin' Gaby, sleep well?” Ally cheerfully asked.

“Yes I did … first time in a long time.” Gaby replied.

As Rhod sat down next to Ally, he took her breakfast off his tray. Gaby noticed he looked a little happier as Rhod than usual and Ally rubbed his back and mouthed a “Thank You” to Gaby, then promptly snapped Rhod's bra!

“Ow! ... Whatcha do that for, Ally?”

“Get used to it girl” Ally commented as she leaned over to plant a kiss on his cheek, much to the amusement of Gaby and Miss Cowlishaw.

Following breakfast, everyone boarded a shuttle bus at the hotel, for Dulles International. Making their way into the terminal to the British Airways departures, everyone soon found themselves reminded of life in the 21 st Century, the three hour wait for International flights.

“Attention please … British Airways, flight 1625 is now boarding … please use gate 34 and have your boarding passes ready, thank you.”

“Well, this is it kids, we're off … say good-bye to America.” Miss Cowlishaw said philosophically.
