A Gaby FanFic
The first thing I have to do is to publicly thank Angharad, KarenJ and last, but certainly not least, Jillian, for all their efforts to decipher my scribbles. It was also their encouragement that gave me the courage to submit this to Maddy, in the first place.
I also extend a warm ‘thank you' to Maddy, for creating this ‘universe' and giving my mind a place to occasionally wander.

“C'mon on, Gabs! … mum and dad are already at the car.” It was hard to tell who was the more anxious, Jules or Gaby.
“No sauna, girl?” Gaby caught the towel tossed at her.
“Not today, Kris', gotta go before the stores close”, Gaby intoned, as she tossed the towel back to Kristen.
“What's the occasion?”
“Later … I promise … “ and with that Gaby flew out the double doors of the workout room.
She quickly joined the others in the car and they made their way into town. Leaving the car in one of the town's public car parks, they made their way through Bad Neuenahr's pedestrian streets that make up much of the shopping district, finally stopping outside the same jeweller's Gaby, Maddy and Kat visited on the previous weekend.
Upon entering a sales clerk, recognizing Gaby, directed her to a counter and with an “Ein moment, bitte”. The clerk disappeared into a back room and after a short time, re-emerged with two ring boxes.
“Well, let's see them, honey… open up!” Gaby thought her mum was like a kid at Christmas.
Gaby thought it strange feeling nervous, but that's how she felt when she opened both boxes for the family to inspect. There before them, sat two pair of virtually identical rings. The clerk said they were of a style called ‘Traditional Celtic'. Each solitaire diamond was set in band of yellow gold that was the width of the stone and the complete outside of the band engraved with traditional Celtic designs. Also in each box, was a matching wedding band. Gaby felt because of the intricate Celtic designs, it was better to get the wedding bands at the same time.
Jules loved Gaby's choice and the fact she even found that design here, in a German jeweler's, made it all the more special. Jenny and Dave both admired Gaby's taste saying that they thought Maddy would just love it. Since the rings were fully paid for, Gaby just had to gather up her purchases, thank the clerk and leave.
Once out of the store, Dave just threw this pitiful, sorrowful look at his youngest daughter and squeezed Gaby's hand. Looking at both her parents, Gaby suddenly realized just how emotional it was for them. Seeing the engagement rings AND the wedding bands only made her intentions that much more real to her mum and dad – no longer just the words and ideas of a love-struck 18-year-old girl.
Next morning, it was business as usual, with all the Bonds heading for the Apollinaris facility. When they arrived, George quickly cornered them and informed Gaby that plans had changed and now she was to leave with Team Apollinaris in the next little while.
The last two weeks was just a break in the Team Apollinaris' schedule, but everything was now packed and ready to leave for their remaining races on the 2008 World Cup circuit. The team had chartered a Boeing 737 and the plan was to drop Gaby off in Manchester on their way to France for the 2008 ‘Tour de Feminine '. George considered it a minor ‘detour' for the team.
For Gaby, the trip from Bad Neuenahr to the airport and loading the plane was a blur. Sitting back in her seat as the aircraft took off, Gaby found time to think. Not taking a commercial flight meant that she wouldn't have to connect from Heathrow to Manchester, cutting about two hours and a bit.
It also occurred to her that she'd not had time to warn Maddy or Carol of her new, much earlier, arrival time. She decided she'd better phone Carol when they got airborne. Maddy would already be at the school and it being the last day, was probably helping the other seniors, getting things ready for tonight or just generally wasting time. Maybe she could surprise Maddy and see Mr. Woods or Miss C. again? The timing would be tight!
“Hello, Auntie Carol? Where am I? I'm told, just about to enter France at 25,000 feet … hello? … I've got a favour to ask – can you meet me at the airport about three hours earlier than planned and meet me at ‘FlightLink'? They're over on the side where all the private corporate stuff goes – yeah, there! Team Apollinaris chartered a plane an' I've hitched a ride. Thanks, ever so much! “ Gaby was thankful she got through to her aunt instead of the answering machine.
“Be right there Tina! … Look, I'm wanted, so I guess I should go … oh, before I do, I've got some news for you, but that'll have to wait until we see each other. See you later …‘bye”.
As she hung up and walked back to her seat, Gaby smiled to herself, feeling she sufficiently triggered Carol's curiosity. Considering all the things Carol had pulled on Drew in the past, Gaby considered it a small bit of ‘payback'.
As Tina Porsche rose to allow Gaby to get back into her seat, she remarked, “What are you looking so smug about, Fräulein Bond?”
“Ahhh, a girl's gotta have some mystery, Tina”
“Mein Gott, gerecht wie Ihre Mutter!” mumbled Tina.
“What?”
“I said, “My God, just like your mother!” By the time Tina got that out, they were both laughing.
George just looked across the aisle at the two of them, smiled and shook his head. He lay back in his seat, closed his eyes and even though Tina still had many good years left in pro cycling, he briefly thought of the day when he'd have another Bond – Porsche duo on Team Apollinaris. He was quite sure that would indeed happen – he knew Jenny, he knew Tina and he'd come to know Gaby…
It seemed to be an all too brief a flight, before they touched down in Manchester and were taxiing up in front of “FlightLink”. With the engines just idling long enough for Gabby to de-plane, the team's plane was once again on the move. She didn't have to wait long in the ‘FlightLink' waiting room before Carol arrived.
They both figured if traffic co-operated, they'd pick Maddy up at the school. As it was, they arrived a good half an hour before the kids were officially let out for the year. Once Carol stopped the car, she turned to Gaby.
“Now what's this ‘good news' you mentioned?”
“Can it wait until you and Uncle John are together? Without Maddy.”
“You'd have a better chance to not to let Maddy know if you tell me now and I can pass it on to her father, in private”. Having brought both diamonds in the one box, Gaby went into her purse, took out the box, opened it and handed it to Carol ….
“Gabeeeeee ” Gaby had never heard her aunt squeal like a young schoolgirl, before, but there's a first time for everything, isn't there? Carol looked at Gaby through moist eyes – “You sure?”
“Never more sure of anything in my life … I love her and I'm not going to chance losing her again.”
Carol could feel the conviction in Gaby's voice. She simply leaned over, gave Gabs a hug and said, “If anyone deserves this, it's you two … I knew it would eventually come to this, especially when she admitted how she still felt about you … congratulations.”
“She still has to say ‘yes', Carol.” Gaby's voice was quiet.
“I'm fairly sure she will, dear.” Carol replied, giving Gaby's hand a couple of squeezes. As Carol closely examined the rings, she exclaimed, “They're gorgeous, Gaby”.
“I left the matching wedding bands with mum. She's supposed to be putting them in our safety deposit box at the bank.”
Upon hearing ‘wedding bands', Carol stopped her inspection and just looked at Gaby . Something about those two words, that just stop the ‘rents, right in their tracks.
“Don't worry Carol, I intend for us to finish our schooling and one of us to have a job, before we start any serious planning.” Gaby touched Carol's hand to reassure her.
Gabs went on to explain why she purchased the wedding bands, along with the diamonds. Carol returned the rings and the box to Gaby. She in turn, returned them to her purse.
Carol turned and slumped behind the wheel, trying to settle in with a book while Gaby decided to venture into the school to see who was around. Once inside, she was met with a totally empty main hall. Seems strange . In all the years I was here, I've never seen this place so dead. It's only 2:30 in the afternoon…
Eventually, she did seen Mr. Woods coming out of the staff lounge, in conversation with Mrs. Johnston.
“Miss Bond?? … Gaby?? … Good Lord, it is you!!” Mr. Woods was obviously excited; a dramatic change from his normal reserved ‘self'.
“Hello Sir … Mrs. Johnston… “
After informing them she was here to pick up Maddy, the three of them had a bit of a reunion in the main hall, with Gaby recounting life in Germany and filling them in on her mum. At one point, Gaby turned her attention to Mr. Woods.
“When I spoke with Maddy, err … Miss Peters last evening, she had been unable to speak with you, but I wonder if she was able to have a word with you today, Sir?”
“About tonight's disco? Yes, she has and I see no problem whatsoever. I look forward to seeing both of you there,” replied Mr. Woods sounding more reserved, like Gaby remembered him.
“Thank you, sir. Will Miss Cowlishaw be there as well?” asked Gaby.
“She will and she's expecting to see both of you.” Upon hearing Mr. Wood's words, a warm feeling began to envelop Gaby. Now all she needed was Maddy to say “yes”.
Three PM and now with the final bell the halls filled with students. The trio just moved to one side and let the sea of humanity pass, until they heard a voice in the wilderness.
“Gaby!” Maddy wound her way through all the other students clogging the hall. Finally reaching her target, she stopped short, turned to Mr. Woods with pleading eyes.
“Oh …… go ahead, Miss Peters!” Mr. Woods couldn't hide the smile on his face.
Apparently it was some kind of code that told Maddy to throw her arms around Gaby's neck and plant a kiss on her mouth! One could swear the noise level in the hall at that point in time, dropped to zero…
“Thank-you, Sir! See you tonight!” Maddy excitedly bade Mr. Woods and Mrs Johnston good-bye.
As the girls turned to leave, the human sea parted before them and feeling a bit like Moses, the girls quickly exited the building, got into the waiting car and in a few minutes they were at Chez Peter's.
After Gaby was installed in the guest room, the three ‘ladies' congregated in the kitchen, catching up on events. When Maddy's dad came home for tea, Gaby had no problem finding a reason to take Maddy out of the room so her mum and dad could talk. The only indication Gaby had that Carol even mentioned it to her husband was when they returned to help set the table. John gave her a smile and nodded his head. Following tea and the washing up, it was time for the girls to start getting ready.
After their respective showers Carol did her best imitation of Sylvia, blow-drying and brushing the girl's hair. Neither girl wanted anything done to it, but rather just leave it straight. Again at Maddy's request, Gaby wore her ‘feather' and her feathered earrings. Gaby gave Carol her ‘dream-catcher' earrings to give to Maddy so both girls could have that ‘Indian look', as Kat called it.
Maddy and Gaby had decided that with it being Maddy's last dance at Warsop College, it was to be a formal affair. Gaby was the first to enter the Peter's lounge. She was wearing a black, pleated, floor length skirt with an off-the-shoulder, long sleeved, ‘pearl-grey' top. Around her neck, she had a simple silver chain necklace and on her wrist, just a watch. This was the first time Maddy's parents had seen Gaby's aboriginal accessories and were quite taken by them.
A minute or two later, Gaby looked on as Maddy came down the stairs and entered the room. She was wearing a sleeveless burgundy, floor length gown, with a V-neck, a full skirt and carrying a matching ‘Bolero' jacket, with three-quarter length sleeves. What choked Gaby up was what Maddy wore around her neck. It appeared it was on a longer silver chain, but it was unmistakably the locket Drew had given Maddy on her 14 th birthday. She also wore a watch and a plain bracelet on her wrists. Gaby thought those ‘dream-catcher' earrings looked better on Maddy than they did on her.
First there was silence as they looked at each other, then a simultaneous “You're beautiful!” followed by the obligatory giggling.
Un-noticed by either girl, John and Carol quietly retreated to the dining room, out of sight of the girls, but still in earshot. With her left hand, Gaby took Maddy's right hand and led her to the couch where they both sat down. Gaby looked directly into Maddy's eyes and in a quiet voice, spoke…
“Maddy … Both on the phone and last Friday when I met you, you asked if I'd take you back … Now I'm asking you to answer your own question by answering my question … will you marry me and agree to be my wife?” Gaby opened her closed right hand and produced Maddy's ring.
Between the tears, the shock and a mumbled cry of “Oh, shit!” as she saw the ring, it dawned on Maddy that this was really happening. Any thoughts or emotions Maddy had, were moving at light speed. Although Maddy tried to shout it out, over-whelmed with happiness and tears threatening to pour out of her eyes, the best she could do was to look Gaby in the eyes and utter her answer in a quiet voice ... “Yes”
Gaby gently took Maddy's left hand and slipped the ring onto her ring finger. Retrieving the other ring from her purse, Gaby then asked Maddy if she would ‘do the honours'. Being Maddy, she decided to go one better and came up with her own words of proposal to Gaby. Upon hearing Gaby say ‘yes', she slipped the diamond on Gaby's ‘ring' finger. The two girls melted into an embrace and a passionate kiss, only to have the moment interrupted a short time later by a sound emanating from the direction of the dining room.
Maddy's parents re-entered the lounge with the usual ‘congratulations' and of course both girls had to give up their left hands for close inspection. Gaby asked Carol to phone her mum while they were at the dance to see if Jenny managed to get to the bank with the bands. She got a vigorous nod in reply.
Carol happened to notice the mantle clock. “Better shake a leg if you expect to get to the school by seven … Repair any ‘damage' if needed … John's already gone to get the car to drive you two ladies to the ball.”
The girls quickly checked themselves over and went out to the waiting car, where Mr. Peters stood. Playing the role of chauffeur, he held the back door open, inviting the girls to get in.
“Ladies?” gesturing towards the opened door, with his hand.
Playing her part, Maddy casually replied “Thank you, John. Warsop College, please.”
“Very good, m'lady” John replied as he closed the door and got behind the wheel.
After a few minutes, Mr. Peters pulled into the car park at Warsop College and instead of stopping in one of the parking slots; he went around, pulling the car up to the steps of the school. Once he put the car in park, he got out and opened the back door for the girls.
“We have arrived, m'lady” as he gestured for the girls to exit. Both girls, especially Gaby, tried real hard to stifle a case of the giggles.
“Thank you, daddy. I have my mobile, so I'll call when we're leaving … that ok? We'll try not to be too late.” Maddy gave her dad a peck on the cheek, put her hand in Gaby's hand and watched as he drove off.
Gaby looked at the school and mumbled something about ‘in for a penny…' The two took a deep breath, looked at each other, then at the school's entrance. Maddy said something about knowing how Dorothy and her friends felt, as they were about to see the ‘Wizard'. Gaby just looked at her.
“You know … Dorothy … the Wizard of Oz?”
“Just hope we don't meet the wicked witch”, Gaby replied.
Without missing a beat, Maddy replied, “We won't, unless Cynthia shows up!” then started giggling and soon had Gaby joining her. That eased tensions somewhat.
All during this time, kids and other couples arrived, so after they regained their composure, the girls started up the ‘yellow brick road' to the main doors of the school. They didn't get far inside when Maddy slowed her pace.
“I need some water”, Maddy said in a flat, serious tone, but with a smirk that betrayed her feelings.
“Why?”
“The wicked witch is up ahead.” As Maddy motioned to a group of girls who were in her home form and that were hanging around outside the gym with their boyfriends, Gaby couldn't help but see the humour in Mad's reference to the ‘Wizard of Oz '. Upon reaching the small group, Maddy greeted Cynthia and the others.
“Maddy, when will you learn, you're supposed to bring a date, not your girl friends.“ Gaby just glared at Cynthia … Meeeowww!
Maddy looked at Gaby and turning back to face Cynthia, coolly replied, “Actually … she's my fiancée.”
The two girls held up their left hands, palms facing inwards and took great pleasure in watching Cynthia's jaw hit the floor. The look on her face was priceless!
Maddy & Gaby, faced with comments like ‘we never knew', were immediately swarmed by the rest of the girls, all curious to how long ‘this' had been going on and all of them anxious to have a turn inspecting the rings. Maddy formally introduced Gaby to the girls – some of who recalled her from her prior appearances at the school.
Meanwhile, the ‘dates' of Maddy's classmates left standing in the hall, wondered what just happened. No one did see Cynthia slink off, but eventually everyone noticed she wasn't around.
Better late than never , Gaby thought. The approach of Miss Cowlishaw and Mr. Woods, broke up the now friendly gathering and ‘rescued' Gaby and Maddy. After the two staff members greeted the assembled group they turned their attention to the two girls. Maddy's friends were a bit surprised when Miss C. greeted both of them with a hug.
Shortly thereafter, Mr. Woods, Miss C. and the two girls, excused themselves from the others and while walking away, began a conversation about ‘life after Virginia'. It wasn't long before Miss C. noticed the engagement rings; naturally both she and Mr. Woods wanted to know all about that! They always knew those two, in some form, would end up together!
Other than the ‘initial look' during the first couple of slow dances and when they snuck the odd kiss, the disco was very enjoyable for the girls. They even spent some time with Em and Ally. Unfortunately, Bernie left for Scotland with her parents earlier that evening, or it would've been a ‘gang' reunion of sorts.
All too quickly, the time came when Maddy thought she should phone for a ride. Plans were made with both Em and Ally to meet the following day and go into town. It was to be Maddy's last full day in Warsop, for a few weeks.
Carol poked her head in the room, “Breakfast in ten!” Gaby immediately thought she sounded too cheerful for this time of day – like Jenny! She smiled to herself as she started to wonder if it's some sort of genetic condition.
After getting out of bed and taking care of business, Gaby decided to awaken her ‘sleeping beauty' like in the fairy tales.
“Hmmmm, I could get used to this,” Maddy cooed with her arms still around Gaby.
“Your mum said ‘brekkies' in ten, an' that was five minutes ago. Guess ya gotta get up.”
“Oh, pooh!” Maddy exclaimed with a pout, as she tried to playfully pull Gaby into bed.
“Girls!” Carol called up stairs.
Upon hearing that, both girls reluctantly hauled themselves out of Mad's room and joined her parents for breakfast.
“Gabs, one thing I meant to ask when I was at your place last weekend … I noticed that your Apollinaris skins have small German flags as trim on your collar, but when we were at the team meeting, no one else, juniors or pros, had them on their skins. How come?”
“When you see the national flag on the collar of anyone's skins, that means they're a national champion,” explained Gaby.
“So … you're now the German National Champion, then?” Maddy's interest was obviously peaked.
“The 2008 Jr. Women's German National Champion for 18 year olds … yeah.” Gaby replied as if it was no big deal. She explained that she won the title back in the first weekend of June, in Lahr, but since no one asked her about it, she didn't mention it!
“What's on your agenda's today?” Changing topics, John asked no one in particular.
“I still have to pack, but Gabs and I've agreed to go into town with Em and Ally for awhile,” replied Maddy.
“I've got to get a few groceries, or we won't be eating tonight,” Carol added, matter-of-factly.
Having heard officially he'd be left alone, John resigned himself to yard work while the girls were out. Carol volunteered to drive the kids into town, once Em and Ally arrived.
Following breakfast, Maddy went upstairs to get ready, while her mum and Gaby did the washing up. Carol used the time alone with Gaby to talk to her a bit more. At least by the time Gaby went upstairs, she didn't have to vie for the ‘facilities' with Maddy!
The girls filled in the time until Em and Ally got to the house, with Gaby helping Maddy pack for Germany. Maddy was advised to pack two bags, not the ‘one' they each took when they went to Virginia. Even though the time spent living out of a suitcase while on the ‘tour' was to be about the same, there was going to be less personal shopping time in which one could supplement their meagre wardrobe, and not much requirement for anything other than jeans, trainers and tops. As Gaby told Mad, ‘it's kind of hard to work on bikes in a mini and heels'. That's not to say Gaby didn't find some outfits to toss into Maddy's bags!
Soon after they completed the packing, Carol announced that Em and Ally had arrived and she was ready to go out. Both girls came bounding down the stairs and they greeted their guests with hugs. That was Carol's cue to herd everyone out to the car, all the while Em was trying to apologize to Gaby for the way they parted company when she moved to Germany.
Once in town, they parted company, with Carol heading to get groceries and the four girls, just going where ever and enjoying each other's company. The feeling was very similar to the ‘gang', of five years ago.
Maddy, ever the shopper took the opportunity to get new trainers and jeans. Gabs even succumbed to Maddy and got a new two-piece bathing suit or two. After all, the hotels were bound to have a swimming pool, were they not? Any Warsop shopping trip was not complete until Gaby had purchased one or two pairs of shoes from Sarah! In fact, all four girls fell prey to Sarah's ‘salesmanship'!
Finally they all found a quiet place they could sit. They ordered a tea, got caught up on lost time and brought Em and Ally up to-date on ‘Maddy and Gaby'. It wasn't until late afternoon when they collectively decided to get the bus and head to their respective homes. The lovebirds had a six-thirty flight to catch tomorrow morning and it was going to be an early night for both of them!
Gaby admitted to herself, she enjoyed the shopping as much as Maddy, probably because she was with her Maddy - yet it felt strange. She wondered if it was because when she used to shop in those very stores, Drew was always mistaken for a girl by various sales staff and Maddy had played along, at Drew's expense. But that was a distant memory, in another life. Now she had her future and Maddy to think about.
“Bzzzzzzttt” As Gaby attacked the radio alarm, she seriously considered running for Prime Minister. Once in office, I'd pass a law making it illegal for people to be awake before the sun came up!
As she entered the land of the living, Gaby became aware the weight of an arm across her chest and turning her head, saw Maddy staring at her with an evil grin on her face.
“Shhhh … I couldn't resist, but I should get back before mum goes and tries to wake me up”, cooed Maddy as she leaned in to give Gaby a morning kiss.
As the overhead light was switched on, Maddy quickly threw the covers over her head and Carol looked over at the bed. Gaby propped herself up, leaned over and facing the ‘lump', lifted the covers and in a flat voice uttered “Busted!” Her choice of words got all three women laughing and at the same time trying to remain quiet as John was still sleeping.
Taking it all in stride and remembering Drew and Maddy on a few occasions gave Carol a lovely warm feeling of deja vu. Telling the girls to get ready, she went back into her own room to get dressed, then headed downstairs to start some sort of a breakfast for the two.
After telling John she was heading out to the airport, Carol led the girls, out into the darkness and to the car. Traffic was light at that hour, even for a Sunday, and they got to the airport in good time. Carol bade them good-bye and headed back to a warm bed, leaving Gaby and Maddy to make their own way to the boarding gate.
The flight itself was boring, but once back in Bonn, Dave was waiting to pick them up.
“Good flight?” Dave inquired, talking to no one in particular.
“Dunno … we slept for most of it, I think. We were up pretty early,” Maddy replied for the two of them.
“Relax for the day, ‘cause both of you and Jenny will be up even earlier tomorrow. Everyone's to meet at the facility by four AM. Apollinaris has given you guys one of their corporate jets for the ‘tour'. I understand they've even re-configured the interior to accommodate your bikes and any equipment that can't fit in the cargo hold. Since there will be only seven of you, you'll all be pampered - executive style,” Dave intoned.
Dave and the girls eventually made their way to the car. Once on the Autobahn, Dave had a pretty quiet drive home with the two girls in back trying hard not to doze off.
At the house, Maddy was once again put in with Gaby. Following that, Jules and Jenny wanted to know everything about the weekend. Even Dave listened in. Both Jenny and Dave had lumps in their throats when they actually saw the girls wearing their diamond rings and cuddled up to each other on the couch. Both Jenny and the girls decided on an early evening.
“Everybody up!” Jenny tried to sound like a platoon sergeant, but was totally unconvincing as she both tried to hide a yawn and wake the girls up at the same time. Maddy rolled over and looked at Gaby's clock radio … two AM! Why'd we even go to sleep?
“(Yaaaaawwwwn) C'mon, darling, gotta get up,” Maddy softly said, as she tried to shake Gaby into something resembling a living being.
With all three women exhibiting reluctance to become mobile, they eventually got showered and dressed, arranged all bags by the door and even managed a bit of breakfast. At three-thirty, Mike appeared at the door, the team van pulled into the drive.
“Don't you dare say it … It's way too early to even think about being awake,” Jenny looked at Mike, shaking her finger, eyes half closed and a smile on her face.
Mike and the girls loaded the van and collected Kristen, then made their way to the team facility to join Hans and the other two girls. After repacking the van and getting everyone situated, Mike drove the van to the airport and the Apollinaris corporate hanger.
All five of the corporate Canadair Challenger 604 ‘biz' jets were done up in the same colours as the team skins, but one aircraft had a little extra to the paint job. By the door, it had the legend ‘2008 Women's Junior World Cup Tour' and below it, the races and below that, the individual names of all who were on the ‘Tour'. ‘Team Apollinaris' was also painted above the cabin windows, like an airline logo. It was like a dream to all the girls.
Once everything was loaded and everyone was allowed to board they all wondered if they could ever be satisfied flying on a normal airliner again. This was ‘POSH'!
“Next stop, Charleston, Virginia! Get comfortable … we do have a microwave and a small kitchenette at our disposal, as well as an entertainment centre stocked with CD's and DVD's .” Jenny announced to all on board.
She explained that they had to fly into Charleston and then by car, cross into W. Virginia before they got to Beckley. It was something like a forty-minute drive.
One of the pilots assigned to the aircraft came back and briefed everyone on emergency procedures and where everything was. All that remained was to get airborne. By now, everyone was extremely excited to actually be on the way! In due time, the excitement levels returned to normal and everyone settled into the normal ‘routine' of a transatlantic flight, after they got used to the idea of crossing the ocean in a ‘small' aircraft. After several hours in the air, one of the pilots came back and announced they were coming into Charleston.
