Question

Part 2

The Doctor came and went, muttering things like.

"Typical Kid, Deaths Door one minute, right as rain the next." His parting shot was,

"He'll be better off sitting up rather than lying down it'll help keep his chest clear."

"Oh good that will make it easier for me." Carol replied, as they made their way down the stairs.

 Gaby robe

Carol returned with a Terry dressing gown, white fluffy and huge.

"This is Johns as well, it should keep you snug."

I put it on and began to feel like one of the seven dwarves, as I almost disappeared inside it.

"Let me help Drew." Carol offered and proceeded to adjust the robe around me, tying the belt (which went round me twice.) and pulling the excess length up to stop it dragging on the floor.

"Right now to get you down the stairs, come on." I followed her out onto the landing, Carol stopped two steps down.

"Ok Drew follow me down." I stepped down behind her.

"Now put your hands on my waist, good, ready here we go." And down we went into the kitchen.

"Slippers," Carol disappeared and returned with a pair of furry slippers complete with rabbit heads and long fluffy ears. I could see why I didn't get them upstairs they were guaranteed to trip me up.

"Hungry yet?"

"Ere. I'm not really sure auntie." I wasn't, I hadn't eaten for 24 hours but didn't feel any of the usual pangs.

"We'll see." smirked Carol as she bustled about the kitchen, the eggs came out with the milk and bread.

In nothing flat a plate of my favourite comfort food appeared.

Eggy bread, suddenly I was sure.

Carol chuckled as I reached for the Hendersons and the next ten minutes were spent in silence as we demolished the meal.

"Better now?"

"That was just what the patient ordered." I chuckled, as I helped clear up.

"No, you sit down in the living room, I'll get these. Go on, scoot."

Carol followed me a few moments later and I found myself in a nest of cushions and blankets on the sofa, a jug of squash on a small table next to me.

"What were you missing in school today?"

"Er. History, the Industrial Revolution."

"Ok. Let's see what we've got." Carol started rummaging among the videos, pulling out a handful.

"These will keep you busy, No before you ask, they're John's He's a bit of an Industrial Archaeologist."

"Oh like Dad you mean."

"Not quite, your Dad likes castles, John likes canal's and things like that."

I looked at the labels Telford, Brindly, Brunel, Robbie Coltrane.

"Robbie Coltrane?"

"It's a history of transportation, You'll enjoy that."

So I spent the next two hours being entertained and informed by Hagrid / Cracker.

It would have been three but I fell asleep.

"I see, too much of a good thing heh?" said Carol with the phone pressed to her ear.

"Yes he just woke up, yes he can talk, he might not make sense though." Carol handed me the phone, laughing.

"Heya kiddo."

"MUM!"

I spent the next ten minutes catching up on the news from Germany, then mum dropped the latest on me.

"I'll see you next week then."

"What! Say that again."

"I said I'll see you next week, George wants me to do some promo work in London on the weekend, it will be pretty hectic, but I'm going to try and get a couple of days tacked on for me and you time."

"Mum that's great! When will you get here/"

"Sometime Thursday I should think, then travel to London Friday."

"Oh." My heart sank. "When do you have to go back?"

"Tuesday but I'll try and stretch it out."

"Oh." I must have sounded a bit strained.

"Drew are you alright? I thought you'd be pleased"

"I am Mum, it's just that, er I'll be in school." I was starting to loose it.

"Drew I'll speak to Mr Woods"

"Ok. But I'm off sick now, I can't see him approving more time off."

"We'll see. In the mean time there's still Thursday, it's better than nothing"

"That's true, What's the Promo Mum?"

"Ha, your not going to believe this, but one of the big cycle stores in London is putting my bike on display, I've got to make some personal appearances. That's all I know so far."

"Your serious, George expects people to want to see your bike?"

"Apparently the stores done it before, last time they had to employ extra security to keep people in order."

"That's weird in a of Kewl kinda way."

"Ha Ha yes it is, I'd better go Drew, I'll see you next week."

"Ok. Mum see you next week, Love you Mum."

"Love you too Drew, Take care, bye."

"Bye Mum."

I felt an arm go round me as Carol sat beside me.

"Cheer up Drew, It's better than not seeing her at all isn't it?"

"Yeah I guess, it's just that every time something good happens to me, something worse happens to spoil it all."

"You certainly seem to get more than your fair share Drew." Carol gave me a hug.

"Tell you what I'll make us some lunch, I'm willing to bet you'll feel better after that."

Carol gave me another squeeze and headed for the kitchen

"Come on Pet lets have some lunch" Carol ladled out some stew into a couple of bowls and hacked a couple of doorstops from the loaf.

After a few spoons my nose started to run, I looked around for a tissue. Carol was way ahead of me and put a box on the table, taking a few herself.

"Perhaps a little heavy on the pepper." Said Carol.

"Dad always says that's a sign of a good stew." I said, brushing my hair back for about the sixth time. It promptly fell across my face again.

"Here let me." Said Carol as she brushed my hair back fixing it with a clip she found in her apron.

"That's better now you can enjoy your stew."

"Thanks auntie" We ate in silence until I was in danger of eating the pattern off the plate.

"Think you could manage some more?"

"Yes please."

"What about dumplings?"

"Well if you're going to twist my arm..." I grinned at her.

"Not exactly healthy eating, but you could use the calories." Said Carol as she refilled my bowl with the brown nectar, carefully spooning a couple of dumplings into the gloop.

"Mmmmm." I sagged back in the chair.

"I take it that you enjoyed that." Laughed Carol, wielding a face cloth in my direction, she cleaned my face wiping my eyes as well.

"Tears all finished now?"

"I wasn't ..."

"Yeah right, just something in your eye then." Carol steered me back to the living room and remade the nest of cushions around me.

"Some music I think." Carol turned the radio on and winced as the thumping beat of 50 Cent leapt out of the speakers.

"Music I said" she muttered as she retuned to Radio 2

Norah Jones filled the room. Before the DJ said.

"Now it's time for our Popmaster quiz; Sarah Bostock in Preston is our first contestant, are you there Sarah?"

"Oh good I like this" said Carol as she bustled about picking up magazines and tidying up.

I was amazed at her knowledge of pop music as she managed to answer almost all the questions.

"You ought to enter, Auntie, you scored better than the contestants."

"Maybe, but it's different when you actually have to do it. Your mind goes blank when the pressures on."

"Yeah your right it happens when a test gets sprung on us at school." I curled up under the blanket and started to doze, the extra helping and dumplings were working their magic, while Katie Melua sang me to sleep.
