Brrrng - Brrrng...
"Hello Bond residence, Dave bond speaking!"
"Hi Dave, its Jenny!"
"Hi Hun, what did you find out?"
"Well I managed to get a flight out in about an hour, direct to Birmingham, so if you could arrange to pick me up, that would be great."
"I'll give Carol a ring, see if she can come over and look after Drew for a bit, what time you expected to land?"
"I reckon it'll be about 7 pm this evening, think you can get there for then?"
"Should be able to, want me to tell the kids you're coming over?"
"No! Let it be a surprise."
"Ok Hun I'll be there for when you land ok!"
"Ok Dave, see you in a few hours."
Brrrng - Brrrng...
"Hello Peters residence, Carol speaking."
"Hi Carol, It's Dave here, can I ask you a favour?"
"Yeah go ahead Dave."
"Well you know Drew has been waiting for his results from the doctor haven't you?"
"Yes I was aware of that."
"well he fainted at school this morning, Jules rang me because they was sending him home, when I got him home there was a letter from the doctors asking for us to contact him as soon as possible, we rang and had a appointment arranged for this afternoon."
"That quick? Usually they don't ask you to go in that quick unless there's a problem."
"Well there was a slight problem so I've had to ring Jen, she's arranged emergency leave to come home as quick as possible, Drew's not taking the news very well."
"Well, what do you want me to do?"
"If it is at all possible when Madeline gets home, could you bring her here and look after the kids while I go and pick Jen up from the airport, but don't let the kids know where I've gone, just say I had some work I had to finish up, ok? By the way Jules is going to a friends house straight after school so she shouldn't be home while about seven thirty or so."
"No problems Dave. As soon as Maddy gets home we'll come right over."
"Thanks Carol, see you in a bit then."
Riiiinnnng went the front door bell.
Must be Carol and Maddy.
"Hi Carol, thanks for coming round."
"No probs Dave, I'm glad I could help."
"Thanks again, I'm gonna set off so I'm there in time."
"What time would you probably be back from work?"
"Oh, about 8 pm I reckon shouldn't take too long to finish up."
"Ok then Dave; see you later when you get back then."
"I'm gonna check on Drew." said Maddy, whist running up the stairs to Drew's bedroom.
"Get up lazy bones!" screams Maddy into my ear.
"Arghhhh!!!" I scream as Maddy bounces up and down on my bed.
"What you doing here?"
"Oh, apparently your dad's had to go into work for a bit, as he missed so much of work, cos he had to pick you up today; he said he should be back about seven thirtyish."
"Huh, oh yeah, I forgot about that."
"Well come on get up mums here and she's making food."
"My mums here?"
"No you idiot, my mums here, duh..." replies Maddy.
"Be down in a few minutes, ok?"
"Yeah well don't take too long will ya."
"K."
"Hi Mrs Pete, sorry Aunt Carol."
"Hi Drew how are you feeling?"
"Ok I suppose, what you cooking?"
"Bacon, eggs, sausages, the usual stuff."
"Mmmmmmm sounds delish."
"Should be ready in about twenty minutes." says Carol.
"Can't wait, I could eat a horse!"
"Thought so, I bet you didn't have any lunch did you?"
"I had a sandwich, that's about it."
"Ok then, like I said shouldn't be long."
"So, what happened at the Docs then Drew?"
"I don't want to talk about it, ok Mad?"
"You know, it doesn't help if you keep things bottled up, you'll eventually snap!" says Maddy.
"I know, but it's a family thing, we've all got to sit down and discuss the options, well all two options that I have, hey do you know if dad rang mum before he went back to work?"
"No idea Drew, maybe he'll ring after he gets home."
"I suppose so." I replied.
"Wanna watch some telly while mums cooking Drew? Maybe well get some ideas for the con."
"Yeah, but I'm warning you, no girl costumes! ok?"
"Don't be so grouchy, it's not like you haven't worn them before."
"Yeah but, this time I'd like to go as me, NOT Gaby!"
"Dinners ready kids. You want to set the table for me Maddy?"
"OK mum, won't be a minute."
"Want some gravy Drew?"
"Yes please Aunt Carol, that'd be nice."
"Slurrrrrp, Ahhhhhh, Burrrrrrrrp."
"I take it you approved then Drew?"
"Yes, that was nice Aunt Carol, I suppose you could tell?"
"Not like we didn't notice Drew, by that horrible noise you made when you finished."
"Sorry!"
"Apology accepted." replies Carol.
"You two going to watch the telly a bit more while I clean up?"
"Yeah ok." replies Maddy and Drew both at the same time.
As Carol goes into the kitchen to wash up, she looks back into the living room at the two kids sat in front of the telly and weeps.
"God they really could be twins, they way they look so much alike is uncanny, I wonder if that's what it would have looked like? If, if..." then Carol starts weeping to herself again as she continues to clean the rest of the plates.
Slam, goes the front door as Jules comes in and dumps her school bag next to the couch.
"Hi Maddy, hi Drew, Hi Mrs Peters."
"You know you can call me Aunt Carol also, that's what I've told Drew to call me anyway."
"Ok then, Aunt Carol it is, where's dad?"
"Well as he had to pick Drew up here from school, he had to pop back to work to finish something off; he said he should be home about eightish."
"Ok then, I'm off for a shower, do I smell food?"
"Yes, I made bacon, sausage and the usual for the kids, have you eaten?" replies Carol.
"Yeah, I had something at my friend's house, but it didn't smell as nice as the smell I smell in here, anyway like I said, I'm off for a shower."
Jules then proceeds to go upstairs for her shower leaving me and Maddy watching the telly.
Slam, goes the door leading from the garage to the house.
"Hi kids, I'm home." says Dave as he comes in lugging some very heavy luggage.
"What's the luggage for dad?" as I look over to the door, then.
"Muuummmmmmm", I scream as I see her just behind dad.
"Hi Drew, we thought we'd make it a surprise, that's why your dad told Carol to tell you he was going back to work for a bit."
"Did I hear someone shout mum?" came an obscure voice from upstairs.
"Yeah Jules! Mums here!" I shouted up the stairs.
With that, I hear what sounds like a heard of elephants running down the stairs, then an almighty crushing blow as Jules launches herself at mum and I.
"Thanks for looking after the kids for me Carol."
"It's my pleasure Jenny, we'll be off then as I'm sure my husband is wondering why he's got home to an empty house."
"Thanks again, we've got a lot to talk about, now I'm home."
"How long you home for mum?" I ask.
"Well at least a week, I've arranged emergency leave from the team, as long as I let them know what's happening, they said it was fine."
"Great!" Jules and I say at the same time.
"Now let me get through so I can have a rest, then we'll have a little chat about what the doctor said today, ok?"
"I'm glad your home mum." I reply.
With that Jules goes back upstairs to finish drying her hair, I go back to watching the telly so mum can get her stuff upstairs and unpack, fifteen minutes later mum and dad come back from upstairs, mum comes and sits next to me, puts one arm over my shoulder and pulls my head in to rest on her shoulder.
"Can you put the kettle on Dave?" asks mum.
"Yep, will be a few minutes though, you want coffee or tea?"
"I'll have a tea, it's been ages since I've had a descent cuppa." replies mum.
"Right then Drew, after I've had this cuppa we all need to chat about what the doctor said, ok!"
"Ok mum." I respond.
"Let me just go and get Jules."
"Why mum?"
"Well she's part of this family too, and we're all going to be here for you, no matter what decision you finally come to, ok!"
"I guess so..." I reply.
Mum goes upstairs to ask Jules to come down, after she's finished drying off her hair, then comes back down and sits where she was a few minutes earlier, five minutes later dad comes back in with the cuppa's gives one to mum, puts his own down on the table then asks me if I want a drink.
"Orange juice please dad."
"Jules do you want a drink?" dad shouts up the stairs, but eventually having to go up and knock on Jules bedroom door, seen as though she couldn't hear him over the hairdryer.
"Just be a few minutes Drew, your sister decided she wants a cuppa also." dad said while going back into the kitchen.
"I'm glad your home mum, even if it is just for a week." then I start crying and she pulls me in even closer for some really big hugs.
"I've really missed you!"
"I know Drew! I know." replies mum while hugging me even closer to the point where I am struggling for breath.
Two minutes later Jules comes bounding down the stairs as usual and proceeds to sit on the other side of mum, also getting a hug from mum, as she cuddles up to her.
"Come on you two, I've got to drink my cuppa before it gets cold and your dad has to make me another one." says mum.
We both let go of mum while she settles back into the settee to drink her cuppa.
"God, it's been ages since I've had a tea like this, all that European stuff tastes horrid." says mum.
Which made us all laugh, I remember having a drink when I met her when she won that race and got her trophy, and the hot drinks are not anywhere near as good as they are here.
"Ahhh that's nice, see you haven't lost your touch with the tea making duties Dave." mum says while smirking at dad, getting a weird look in return from dad.
Ten minutes later mum puts her empty cup down, turns to me and says.
"Well young man, what did the doctor say exactly?"
I cringe take a deep breath, getting ready to tell all to mum.
